Embedded real-time PID control loop
Generates dynamic PV, SP, and OP behavior instead of static or randomized test values.

PiOPCServer is simulation OPC server software with an embedded real-time PID control loop. Built by PiControl Solutions, PiOPCServer generates dynamic, realistic tag data (not static or random values) and exposes it through a standards-compliant OPC-DA and OPC-UA server interface. It exists to let developers, systems integrators, and PiControl's own engineering team validate OPC client connectivity, build and debug integrations, and demonstrate OPC-connected software, all without needing an actual DCS, PLC, or live plant connection.
Building or testing an OPC client (a SCADA screen, historian connector, custom integration, or third-party application) usually requires a live control system to connect to. PiOPCServer removes that dependency: it is a self-contained OPC server that behaves like a real control loop, with a process variable that actually responds the way a live DCS tag would, so client-side testing catches the subscription, refresh-rate, and reconnect issues that static test tags never surface.
PiOPCServer runs a real-time PID control loop internally and publishes its live PV, SP, OP/MV, mode, and alarm tags through a standards-compliant OPC-DA and OPC-UA server. Any OPC-compliant client can connect to it exactly as it would connect to a live DCS or PLC — no proprietary middleware, no physical control hardware, and no plant connection required. Because the underlying loop is dynamic rather than scripted, the tags it exposes behave like production data, which is what makes it useful for real connectivity testing rather than a canned demo.
Generates dynamic PV, SP, and OP behavior instead of static or randomized test values.
Publishes tags over the same protocols PiControl software uses to connect to every major DCS and PLC.
PV, SP, OP/MV, mode, and alarm-status tags, ready for OPC client subscription testing.
Runs on a standard Windows PC — no DCS hardware, no PLC hardware, no proprietary equipment.
Confirms SCADA, historian, and custom-integration clients subscribe, refresh, and reconnect correctly.
Used for pre-deployment integration testing and for live software demos without a plant connection.
Teams building OPC-DA or OPC-UA client software (SCADA screens, historian connectors, custom middleware, or third-party integrations) use PiOPCServer as a standing target to develop and debug against. Because its tags move continuously from a real PID loop, developers can exercise subscription setup, refresh-rate handling, deadband behavior, and reconnect logic under realistic, changing data — before the client ever needs to reach a live DCS or PLC.
PiControl's own engineering and QA teams run PiOPCServer to validate OPC connectivity on every new software release before it reaches a customer's process control software environment. Sales and support engineers use the same tool to demonstrate OPC-DA and OPC-UA connectivity to prospects live, without needing access to a plant, a DCS, or a PLC test bench.
PiOPCServer's feature set is built for one outcome: OPC client software that connects correctly the first time it meets a real control system.
Runs an internal PID controller that continuously updates PV, SP, and OP values.
Dynamic data exposes timing and refresh-rate problems that static or random test tags cannot.
Publishes tags through the same standards used by every major DCS and PLC.
Client code tested against PiOPCServer connects to a real control system with no rework.
PV, SP, OP/MV, mode, and alarm-status tags configured to match the client under test.
Reproduces the exact tag structure a target SCADA, historian, or integration expects.
Installs and runs on a standard Windows PC with no DCS or PLC hardware required.
Any developer's desk becomes a full OPC test environment in minutes.
Confirms subscription, refresh-rate, and reconnect behavior across driver and protocol updates.
Catches connectivity regressions before they reach a customer's live control system.
Runs a convincing, continuously live OPC data source for prospect and stakeholder demos.
Removes the need for plant access or a DCS/PLC test bench to show OPC connectivity.
Testing an OPC client is easy to get wrong quietly. A generic OPC server simulator that serves fixed values or random noise will confirm that a connection opens and a subscription returns something, but it never exercises the behavior that actually breaks integrations in the field: a PV that ramps predictably toward a setpoint, an output that saturates, or a value that changes fast enough to test refresh-rate and deadband settings honestly.
A fixed-value test tag proves a subscription can read one number once. It cannot reveal whether a client correctly handles value changes, timestamps, or quality-flag transitions — the events that make up most of an OPC client's real workload.
A random-number generator produces movement, but not the correlated, physically constrained movement of a controlled loop. Clients tuned against random noise can still fail against a real PV that ramps, overshoots, or holds steady near a setpoint.
The alternative — testing new OPC client software directly against a live DCS or PLC — means scheduling plant access, risking misconfigured writes, and burning engineering time that should be spent on the plant, not on client debugging.
PiOPCServer removes the structural problem: a live, standards-compliant OPC-DA and OPC-UA server whose data comes from a real PID control loop, not a script, so client software gets realistic behavior to test against with no plant connection and no production risk.
PiOPCServer is part of PiControl's OPC communication family, alongside the monitoring and logging software that consumes real plant OPC data once a client connection has been validated.
Once a client is validated against PiOPCServer, PiBridge is the dual OPC client bridge PiControl uses to connect two real OPC servers across different networks, protocols, or sites, without proprietary middleware.
PiLogger captures PV, setpoint, and controller-output trends at sub-second resolution over OPC once a validated client is reading live plant data, for tuning analysis and root-cause troubleshooting.
APROMON subscribes to PID and APC loop data over OPC to monitor loop performance continuously, ranking loops by economic loss once connectivity has been proven.
Every plant PiControl serves eventually connects a SCADA, historian, or custom application over OPC — PiOPCServer is how that client software gets proven before it reaches a live control system.
PiControl Solutions software runs in plants across 40+ countries, and PiOPCServer is the OPC-DA and OPC-UA testing and demonstration tool behind every one of those deployments — validating client connectivity before an installation team ever touches a live DCS or PLC.
